[Newsgroups] Rar files passworded, what to do?

Hi,
I'm fairly new to the usenet bandwagon, and about half of the stuff I've downloaded (TV show DVD rips, mostly) have required a RAR password to extract. I use usenetsearch to generate nzb's, and I'm thinking maybe I'm missing a step here. Does anyone know what the common practice is about this? I assume it's not just some sadistic person who wanted me to download a 5gig file only to not have the password to unlock it. But I could be wrong I suppose.
Thanks!

I have never seen a rar that has needed a password. At least one that hasnt had one within the nfo.
Oh.. there is no usenet bandwagon!

I ran into a passworded one on Usenet several weeks ago. It
had no NFO file nor any password with it. I don't see how
they expected downloaders to be able to extract the files.
Another more recent example was one on BitTorrent. The
password was in the name of the file (it was the URL of
the site that uploaded it first).

Ryans right. The password is typically found in the NFO file. However I have seen some groups release stuff where the only way to get the password is to be a member of there forum/website and the password will be in there. To me, I think that is incredibly childish and I hope this practice doesnt become more common place. Does the content say a website at all to go to?

My thought is that they purposely do it as they only want one or a select few who have the password to download it, maybe personal friends.
Having said that, I've never run into needing a password after downloading.

Ouuu doctor four had a good example I forgot about. Like he said try the name of the group if its in the header or url. Sometimes I see files that require passwords which are as simple as that.
There is another reason why there might be a password and that is it may also be prepared to be uploaded to a site like rapidshare. A password is usually added to help stop the file from being pulled from these type of sites.

Rapidshare deletes all reported files regardless of them being passworded or not. All it takes to get them deleted is the url.

Try googling the name of the release group or release name. Is the a URL in the title? try that as the password.

Yep. some people post for a friend in a public newsgroup for anononimity reasons. As I've said in a recent other thread, I do most of my online stuff via TOR and Privoxy, and with newsgroups I use remailers. That way if someone pulls my headers Im invisible.
Anyhow. I've run across several passworded rars. If the poster doesnt post the passcode just assume its for a private distribution.

these are FAKE FILES people!

The vast majority of passworded files on Usenet are put there by the anti-piracy companies hired by the big media corporations to spew out decoy files across the internet. That includes all peer-to-peer networks as well as Usenet. (I don't think any have started hitting one-click file-upload sites yet) Even if you knew the right password to open the rars, that would not help because those are all blank files inside.
Back in September, one of those anti-file sharing companies had thousands of its internal emails leaked, and those emails detailed the inside workings of their efforts to sabotage file sharing. Leaked mails revealed the company had multiple usenet posting accounts on many of the major usenet providers, and they were spamming usenet like crazy.
I can't guarantee that every passworded file on Usenet comes from the anti's spamming efforts, but I think that probably the overwhelming majority do. (just think about it - if someone actually wants to release a file privately, sites like MegaUpload are a far superior solution)
A simple way to avoiding this problem is to search for files using verified-file NZB websites like Newzbin.com or any other NZB sites where users post NZBs of verified downloads. Using blind search engines like Binsearch to try to find the latest blockbuster movie will likely get you a load of passworded fakes.

Digital archives are particularly useful if you want to save some space on the computer. Furthermore, they are frequently used to transfer files over the Internet, by emails or other content sharing methods. Free RAR Extractor is a program that was created for this particular type of folder, in order to help you extract their contents.

Easily import desired files

Hope

The app has a clean interface that is quite easy to figure out by all users, regardless of their previous experience with this type of tools.

Thus, you may add files in two modes. One involves browsing the directories on the disk in search for the desired archive, while the other implies simply moving the files over the app’s interface, since it comes with drag-and-drop support.

Can handle various archive formats

Regardless of the chosen method, once the file was selected, it requires that you choose an output directory, where the items from the archive should be stored.

The app comes with support for various types of files, such as ZIP, 7Z, RAR, ISO, JAR, LHA, CAB and TAR. If the item is encrypted, the program can still extract the files inside, provided you know the correct password.

To end with

The bottom line is that Free RAR Extractor is a light tool that can come in handy quite often. Inexperienced individuals shouldn’t have any problems working with this tool, thanks to the intuitive layout and the app's overall simplicity.
