Install Windows 95 From Floppy

How to instal a windows 98 SE to a laptop using floppy drive and usb stick.
Note
This info is given as is with no quarantee.
Use at your own risk.
Ingredients
- One HP omnibook XE2-dc laptop with broken cd/dvd drive.
- One 1.44 MB floppy disk
- Working windows 98 system
- 1 GB usb stick
- Internet connection
- Original windows 98 installation disk
- One new (4 GB solidstate) IDE disk already installed to the
old laptop.
Situation
Luckily this laptop has a working floppy drive and one USB port.
Unfortunatelly the laptop does not boot from usb.
Mission
Install windows 98 SE to laptop.
A. Steps with working windows 98 se system
1a. Use internet connection to download usbaspi.sys and di1000dd.sys.
A good link for this is
http://www.toolsthatwork.com/bbdocs/usb.htm
2a. Format 1.44 MB floppy disk using windows 98 command prompt.
Use command
format a: /s
3a. Locate himmem.sys from the windows 98 installation disk and copy it to
the floppy disk. You can use windows built in search function to do this.
4a. Copy usbaspi.sys and di1000dd.sys to the floppy disk.
5a. Use notepad to create config.sys file to the floppy disk.
Contents of the file are as follows
dos=high,noumb,noauto
device=a:himem.sys
device=a:usbaspi.sys
device=a:di1000dd.sys
6a. Use notepad to create autoexec.bat file to the floppy disk.
Contents of the file are as follows
echo on
(this is probably not neccesary)
Please note that notepad likes to name everything
with a suffix .txt. If this happens you need to rename the
files.
7a. Use internet connection to download USB-mass storage driver
from http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php.
I recommend printing the installation instructions at this point.
This driver is not needed for booting from the floppy. It is used
later to copy windows 98 SE installation files to hard disk.
Copy the mass storage driver (nusb33e.exe) to the floppy disk
8a. Use internet connection to download manufacturer specific
device drivers from the internet.
9a.insert usb stick to a usb connector. I presume that you
already have usb mass storage driver installed to your windows 98
system. If you do not have please install a driver. You may
use previously downloaded driver nusb33e.exe.
10a. Insert windows 98 SE installation disk to the cd-rom drive
11a. Copy windows installation files to the usb stick. You do not
need to copy samplecd folder.
12a. Copy manufacturer specific device drivers to the usb stick.
B. Steps with the laptop
1b. Insert bootdiskette to the floppy drive
2b. Connect USB stick to the laptop
3b. Turn on the laptop. Now the laptop should boot from the
floppy disk.If this is not the case then enter bios and change
boot device priority.
When the laptop boots make a mental not of the usb drive letter.
I have succesfully tested this with a 1 gb sandisk cruzer micro usb stic and
256 MB kingston data traveller. I was unsuccessful with transcend JFV30 / 2GB
but this was formatted as a super floppy.
4b. Change dir to the usb drive and start windows installation.
(This is what I did. I probably should have copied all of the
installation files and driver files to the new hard disk.
for this you need some copying app. Xcopy might suffice)
now installation copies the files to the hard drive.
THIS WILL TAKE A LONG TIME
Remove the floppy disk while copying is in progress
When the file copy is ready the installation will reboot.
Now this where things get tricky since now you loose the
'installation cd' since usb is disconnected.
NOW UNPLUG THE USB STICK FROM THE CONNECTOR
5b. Answer all questions and input product codes.
6b. Windows will continue the installation nicely until some
device driver or installation file is required. At this
point windows will ask for the installation CD-rom. Now
if you did not copy the installation files previously
you now have to cancel driver installation. Just click
cancel for as long as you get to the desk top.
7b. Insert floppy disk
8b. Copy usb mass storage driver from the floppy disk
to the hard drive.
9b. Install windows 98 mass storage driver according to
the instructions given by the driver manufacturer. Reboot if
asked.
10b. Make a folder for the windows installation files to the
hard disk. Eg. w98inst or tmp.
11b. Connect usb mass storage (usb stick)
12b. Copy windows installation files to the hard disk to the folder
previously created.
13b. Create a folder for the manucaturer specific driver files
eg. laptopdrw or tmp2 ...
14b. Uncompress manufacturer specific drivers if necessary
15b. Install drivers according to the instructions given
by the manufacurer.
16. Congrats if everything is working.
